The story behind a legendary dish.
There are many versions associated with the Italian superstition known as gnocchi of fortune. One of the most popular dates back to the 4th century, when Saint Pantaleon, a physician and pilgrim, is said to have knocked on the door of a humble family asking for food. A little potato gnocchi was all they could offer. When the visitor left, the family found gold coins under the plates in return for their generosity.
The legend became popular throughout Italy. During the meal, diners place a coin or banknote under their plate of gnocchi. The money is then kept until the following month, so that they never run out. This is usually repeated on the last Thursday of the month or on the 29th, depending on the region.
