Celebrated on February 14th, Valentine's Day is the global equivalent of Brazilian Valentine's Day. Its origins lie in a historical event that occurred in Rome in the 3rd century, when Emperor Claudius II forbade the marriage of soldiers in his army. This decision was defied by the cleric Valentine, who secretly performed marriages until he was discovered and condemned to death. During his imprisonment, he is said to have fallen in love with the daughter of a jailer. In declaring his love through a letter, he signed it "from your Valentine." Centuries later, the date of his execution became a celebration of love, in which couples exchange gifts and romantic letters like that of the condemned man who became a saint.
